2 Great Print Workshops and 2 Creative Portrait Workshops for Autumn 2011
2011 started with a great workshop including participants from Finland, Italy and Austria. The participants inspired me with their imagination and invention producing amazing art in a very short time with their new found skills. The time flies and the studio is buzzing well into the evenings with the printers going non stop!
Gary Wornell continues his 4 day Digital Printmaking Workshops in October at the studio in Riihimäki, Finland. The courses are designed for artist professionals and skilled amateurs as well as photographers and traditional print makers who wish to expand their craft printing repertoir.
The courses are lively, energetic and informative and provide a perfect starting point for beginners and advanced printmakers to explore new territory. With a good selection of Epson Large Format Stylus Pro and Stylus Photo printers, everyone can find out just what makes these printers so versatile.
Gary Wornell is a certified Digigraphie® printmaker and artist.

The creation of the Digigraphie® label is relatively recent. Digigraphie® was officially launched on 13th November 2003. But its practice is much older. For several years, photographers, sculptors and painters, as well as service providers (photo laboratories and lithographic studios), have been using the technology of Epson printers to produce prints on art paper. This in turn has opened the doors to a new discipline: the digital reproduction of a work of art. Aside from exploring alternative media and coating processes, each workshop will introduce the idea behind Digigraphie® and provide help if you would like to get started selling your art through the Digigraphie® community.

Previous workshops have included participants from other parts of Europe interested in meeting like-minded artists. The studio is always buzzing with energy and the result is a cross fertilization of ideas and techniques.

2 day Creative Portrait workshop - 200 € VAT/ALV 0%
For participants familiar with digital DSLR cameras
The idea of this workshop is to encourage participants to take great portraits. There is no formula to work with people; there is only a relationship which needs to develop before the camera comes into play. Each subject comes to the photographer with a certain reluctance and shyness. It is our job as photographers to start the conversation - a genuine two way communication - in order to find the person we are photographing. With simple tools and basic understanding of lighting, backgrounds and camera settings participants will find wonderful freedom in portraiture.

4 day Digital Printing Workshop
price includes all materials for the course - 400 € VAT/ALV 0%
For basic, intermediate and advanced level students familiar with medium A3+ desktop and wide format inkjet printers.
The idea of this workshop is to open the doors to the possibilities of inkjet printing on a wide variety of media; encourage the use of alternative printing methods and enable the student to have time to complete complex processes from start to finish. This is a creative course with an emphasis on technical solutions to unique problems.

Photo: Dace Gaile
By learning about the technical possibilities and limitations of inkjet printers, the student will quickly be able to assess the potential success of an idea based on the hard facts governing these complex printing devices. By understanding what the printer can and cannot do the student will be able to implement creative solutions to overcome problems.
Workshop outline
The workshop will give the student advanced training on operating Epson Medium and Wide Format printers including settings for various media and print quality.
The workshop will begin with understanding colour; the calibration of monitors including your own laptops, working with and creating custom profiles for a wide range of hand coated and factory coated media.
The student will learn how to adjust special settings for the printers to maximise the quality by adjusting inkjet focus, platten gap and media feed based on media thickness and ink absorbtion.
Create your own inkjet coatings from standard art materials. Combine traditional art materials and colours with inkjet printing to add depth and enhance the visual quality of the work.
Methods for media feed including edge to edge on deckled edge papers. How to print an album (such as a wedding album) on both sides of double sided media, and how to print on asymetric flat shapes.
The advanced use of Qimage - one of the best and cost effective printing software solutions will allow the student to print with professional control and certain results. How to set up the software to maximise your computors available resources. The printing workflow includes the use of colour profiles for standard Epson Media and any new profiles created on the course by participants.
Post coating for print protection. The use of postcoats applied with spray, sponge roller and brush for special effects. Coatings include UVLS (Ultra Violet Light Stabilisers) to maximise pigment print life and durability.
Facilities at the studio
Students should bring their own files for printing and any personal choices of media up to 1.8mm thick. This really is the thickness limit for these wide format printers and depending on the coatings there may be problems which we cannot overcome.
Keep in mind that this course is intended to produce finished work, but the main purpose is to experiment and explore a wide variety of ideas and methods for production. The limited time available will become very busy with prints in the queue and the aim of the course is to inspire and encourage experiment.

4 Day Participant
Great many thanks Gary for the course and the most pleasant get-together and teaching. I'm a regular participant for various photography related courses and events and I must say your four day course was one of the best if not the best for years. You had prepared the course and its concept thoroughly and the four days passed like a sway. You paid attention to everybody nicely and I got what I came to see and more.

I'm satisfied not only about what I learned but also to be in one room with other printing artists. You can exchange ideas, technical information etc. I wanted to improve my creative skills and with you I learned the technical skills to do so. ...4 days were to short and maybe that is an important feature of a good workshop.

Thank you very much for a excellent and effective course. All this printing was new new to me so it was very interesting and fascinating and made me see new ways to use my photographs. You have a clear and nice way to teach. There was humour and relaxed working spirit and everyone was very motivated and wanted to learn. Days were full of program but we managed to do all what was in the program. However we could have continued on the next weekend too.

It was very interesting and inspiring learning about Garys techniques and printing onto different surfaces and using materials not tried before. I especailly liked the rabbit skin glue - it gave a really durable and matt surface. Gary's results are very impressive, combining creativity, technical excellence and great craftsmanship. I could see huge possibilities in my own work...
