Face Values
Portraits from Latvia
In July 2009 I began a 2 month residency at NOASS in Riga Latvia. I arrived open minded and prepared for any experience that the situation would provide.
I spent much of my time walking the streets of the city - from one suburb to the next recording city life and the environment that supports it - but it was the people I met on a daily basis that gave me my direction.
Face Values started as an idea rooted in the asumption that when we encounter people for the first time we depend on an intuitive response to guide our way into a relationship with them. In photographing them I hoped to find something from the inside revealed on the outside.
These are photographs of the actual prints on hand coated Japanese papers. To see the exhibition installation at NOASS
