The sleeping forest

The Finnish forest is at once compelling and mysterious; myriad layers of green etched into the side of a lake absorbing the suns rays and drawing us into its ancient secrets.

In the years that I have lived in Finland I have come to realise that Finnish people respond to the seasons in the same way nature does. As the days shorten and the light changes one can feel the gentle slowing down of the pulse until the heartbeat is barely noticeable. Colour changes to monochrome - frost forms feathers on the thin branches in silence. The world of commerce and the vibrancy of the city are but thin masks over the sleeping soul of the hybernating nation.
